Children’s House Overview
Throughout the ages of 3-5, children are at a time of great transformation from dependency to a “let me do it myself” mentality. The Children’s House environment is a community designed to progress each child at their level as lesson plans are individualized to scaffold learning in areas of practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language development, culture, art and more.
We offer a three-hour work period that builds concentration, meets a child’s need for order and helps them explore the important roles they play within their family, community and their culture to become independent beings. Children choose their own activities and work at their own pace under gentle guidance of trained teachers. In this way a child’s innate curiosity and love of learning are fostered.
Blending First Steps with Elementary
Children’s House is a blending of our private/nonprofit (tuition-based) First Steps program and our public kindergarten. The Children’s House (also called Primary) is the Montessori classroom for 3- to 6-year-olds (ECE 3-K in conventional education). Kindergartners will be with the younger students for the three-hour morning work cycle and recess to continue community building.
Children’s House is a 10-month program, aligned with our elementary schedule. We have a two-month summer break, during which time we offer a Summer Camp program for 3- and 4-year-old students in First Steps.
Important Note About Enrollment
Our 3- and 4-year-olds must apply for enrollment through our First Steps program, as it is not part of the DPS system.
At a Glance
The materials in our classrooms were developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.These hands-on materials are meant to be attractive to the child and help develop very specific skills.
The materials are carefully organized on shelving for students to choose from. When a student is ready, the teacher provides them with a lesson on the work, and then the student is allowed to continue to master it before moving to the next lesson. The work also allows for explorations beyond the lessons called extensions.
Schedule & Supplies
The three-hour work cycle provides opportunities for children to develop academic, motor and social skills as well as concentration, independence and self-esteem. The environment is prepared to allow the child to move freely within the classroom and to choose from the materials developed by Dr. Montessori.
Notes
- Children enjoy lunch with their teachers and an afternoon nap.
- We believe that fresh air is an important part of the day and children spend time on the playground daily.
- There are three teachers in these classrooms, with a 10:1 ratio.

- Standard crib sheet and blanket (full-day nappers only)
- Extra clothing (weather appropriate)
- Sun hat and glasses encouraged for sun protection

First Steps: Three Programs for Young Learners
First Steps offers three program levels designed to support children as they grow. These include our programs for Infants, Toddlers and Children’s House
Infants ages 6 weeks to 15 months are supported by caring educators who foster curiosity, confidence and joyful learning from the very beginning.
Toddlers ages 15 months to 3 years build independence and confidence through hands-on exploration and meaningful daily experiences.
Students ages 3-5 are encouraged to follow their curiosity while developing foundational skills in academics, practical life, creativity and collaboration.
